We want to hear your stories and experiences dealing with race, culture & identity in Utah. Tell us how race has mattered this past year.
Information for performers:
We will make a few call outs during the night for people who are moved to speak but weren't planning on speaking. You can also register the night of (look for a registration table) or ask to be put on the schedule ahead of time (email raciallyjustutah@gmail.com)

Youth Leadership & Activism Conference A.K.A. YLAC
The Next YLAC will take place February 4th, 2017 at the Law and Justice Building in Salt Lake City.

This event is FREE and open to all Utah high school students. Sorry no adults for this event. Exceptions for caretakers for students with special needs and formal supervisors accompanying youth in a program (i.e. YouthWorks or Boys and Girls Club).

Hosted by Racially Just Utah, Salt Lake Peer Court, and the ACLU of Utah, with support from Planned Parenthood’s Teen Council, Spy Hop, the Disability Law Center, and YouthWorks Salt Lake, the annual Youth Leadership & Activism Conference is a collaborative conference for youth on how to engage in activism and help end Utah's school-to-prison pipeline. It is free and open to all Utah high school students, with sessions topics on media; Knowing your rights in while protesting; Bystander Intervention; Self-advocacy in school discipline hearings; Take part in a fun social media campaign, and more!

Faith in Reform
FAITH IN REFORM is an engaging, interactive mini-Summit to encourage and grow grassroots criminal justice reform efforts in Utah!
This event is anyone and everyone who is working for positive change in their professional work , their faith community, or as part of a community organization or even totally on their own. We don't want this to be a traditional conference where we talk AT each other. Rather, we hope this event will offer opportunities for:
Topics in the past have included human trafficking, the school-to-prison pipeline, programming needs, legislative opportunities, indigent defense.
Partners have included the ACLU of Utah, Calvary Baptist Church, Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake, Journey of Hope, First Unitarian Church, Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness (USARA), Utah Prisoner Advocate Project.
This event is anyone and everyone who is working for positive change in their professional work , their faith community, or as part of a community organization or even totally on their own. We don't want this to be a traditional conference where we talk AT each other. Rather, we hope this event will offer opportunities for:
- Networking with other advocates, activists and concerned community members!
- Sharing ideas to make programs and services stronger, to better help people trapped in the criminal justice system!
- Recruiting new volunteers for your organization...or finding excellent volunteer oppotunities for yourself!
- Brainstorming through challenges in working toward reform, or working with justice-involved folks!
- Helping each other to overcome obstacles in policy, practice and culture!
- Learning how to help advocate for change at the state and local levels!

Week of Action Against School Pushout

PRESS RELEASE: 2016 National Week of Action Against School Pushout is October 15 to October 23 (10/14/16)
Salt Lake Peer Court, Racially Just Utah, the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah, Teen Council, Planned Parenthood, and Spy Hop annually collaborate to promote the National Week of Action on School Pushout (October 15-23, 2016) spearheaded by Dignity in Schools. The Week of Action Against School Pushout seeks to engage the community in conversation around the imbalance between growing investment in juvenile justice and the diminishing funding for public education.
Dignity in Schools articulates the goals of the Week of Action as calling on the federal government, states, districts and schools to:
Each year, RJU works with national partner, Dignity in Schools, and local allies to host events and community discussions to speak up and demand that we invest in education, not incarceration.

- Shift funding from school police to counselors and positive discipline.
- Use positive interventions instead of suspensions, expulsions or arrests, and end racial disparities in discipline.
- Fully implement positive alternatives such as Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Restorative Practices.
- Engage students and parents in decision-making about discipline policies.
Each year, RJU works with national partner, Dignity in Schools, and local allies to host events and community discussions to speak up and demand that we invest in education, not incarceration.
